One interesting side effect of the way that fwextract.pl operates is that
you can notice if the firmware has actually changed across driver
versions. There's a table at the top of the program. It has two types of
MD5 sums held inside it. The first is used to recognize which Windows
driver files have "interesting stuff". The second MD5 sum is per-firmware
instance and calculated on the actual firmware that is extracted - so you
can use that as a fingerprint to notice which driver versions actually
contain what firmware versions. In the case of the 29xxx FX2 firmware, I
think that firmware image has actually remained unchanged all along. The
cx23416 (mpeg2 encoder chip) firmware however has evolved over several
versions.
There should be no harm in grabbing the latest Hauppauge driver, but I
haven't really noticed any behavioral changes related to firmware.
