Didn't help but found recently on my laptop, I had no problems with
firmwares being uploaded.
Bah! Found I had updated udev and there were updated /etc files for
updating (etc-update)! As I failed to update these main udev config
files (including udev hotplug config files), the firmware was failing to
upload because the udev code didn't know it's stuff! (lol, but not
really lol.)
As a general rule, always make sure you update your config files using
etc-update on gentoo boxens! :-) (I blame my laziness here on girls.)
