Yeah, you nailed it. In 20/20 hindsight this should have been obvious to
me. The root cause is that you have a multi-standard tuner and the driver
has to "pick" something when it starts. It's picking the wrong thing, but
you also have xawtv configured with the correct video standard, which of
course it is setting. On the other hand, mplayer can't understand that it
is talking to a v4l device (because it's opening it like a file) so it
can't know to even try to change the video standard. So it uses whatever
the current setting is. The answer to all this is precisely what you
figured out. Good job.
